Inferno was finished around 1314 (the story is set in 1300) and is the first part of the epic poem Divine Comedy. It is followed by Purgatorio and Paradiso. Inferno, Italian for Hell, tells the story of Dante's journey through Hell guided by the poet Virgil. There are nine circles in Dante's Hell and these are: Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud and finally Treachery. The Divine Comedy is an allegory representing the journey of the soul towards God with the first volume, Inferno, depicting the recognition and rejection of sin.
